Health professionals, fitness guides, and lately the media have all
praised the delicious pomegranate which has the antioxidant potency
that is the equal of green tea, without the aluminum. As such the fruit
is highly desirable in an aging population that has become conscious of
cellular damage enacted on the body by free radicals.
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: "Pomegranates are
proving to be the most powerful antioxidant source available, better than
red wine, tomatoes, vitamin E and a variety of other headline makers." As
well as health publications, the crimson fruit is even being touted by the
fashion world. According to Vogue Magazine: "Move over, blueberries -
it's all about pomegranates. Scientists have been obsessing over the fruit
more than ever. Labs have discovered pomegranates are good for the heart!"
If you need to engage in a daily ritual like the old "apple a day" saying,
then perhaps it is time to add the royal fruit to your regimen. According
to a Reuters story: "Pomegranate Juice Each Day May Keep the Cardiologist
Away." The fruit can also lower cholesterol. In a study
published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, men drinking
pomegranate juice significantly increased the antioxidant level in their
blood, and reduced oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Pomegranates also contain various nutritious and pharmacological
substances such as vitamins B1, B2, C and niacin, potassium, amino acids
tannins and alkaloids. As a potent source of antioxidants, the
pomegranate is rich in polyphenols, which promote a healthy cardiovascular
system. Studies of healthy subjects showed that even moderate consumption
of the juice could have significant beneficial results.
According to studies at an Israeli Institute of Technology, the cholesterol
oxidation process - which creates atherosclerotic lesions that narrow
arteries and result in heart disease - was slowed by as much as 40 percent
when healthy subjects drank 2 to 3 ounces of pomegranate juice a day for
two weeks. The juice also reduced the retention of "bad" cholesterol that
after its oxidation accumulates to form atherosclerotic lesions.
If certain foods and products should be included in the diet on a daily
basis, even in small quantity, the pomegranate stands above all others
for its proven track record of reducing effects of aging and promoting a
healthier and happier individual.

You can often be creative with your pomegranate, inventing what is unusual,
tasty and healthy. One of the least favorite foods in terms of health
could be considered corn. Take whole corn kernels, add them to a wok, along
with garlic, cauliflower pieces, and extra virgin olive oil,
and mix in pomegranate seeds. Heat and stir until all of the
popcorn pops. And there you have Pomegranate Popcorn, and
without all that extra salt that you don't otherwise need.
